Happy New Year from the Guinea Pigs

The holidays are traditionally a slow time for us, musically, but we did manage to sneak out to Lasalle Market for their Friday open mike over the holidays.

We've already started booking for the spring season - festivals, fairs, and farmer's markets are our specialty, but we're happy to come play for your party or event!

Safe and happy New Year to all - hope 2014 is filled with music, love, and laughter!

Glastonbury Apple Harvest Festival

Well, it was early for a Sunday, but the weather was amazing - as was the venue. Thanks to the Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce for the invite to play - thanks to the folks on sound and stage for making it easy, and thanks to everyone who came out to listen!

The Guinea Pigs: Dan, Steve, Sandy and Jude
Next up - the last Wethersfield Farmers' Market of the season, Thursday October 24, from 3 - 6 pm.

We had a blast, thanks to folks who came out, and thanks to Bob Antaramian, for being the official Guinea Pigs photographer!

Upcoming Events

We've got a few weeks off, but are looking forward to two upcoming gigs:
  1. Higganum Farmers' Market - Friday August 30 / 4 - 7 pm
This is lovely market, great people and vendors, and we get to play in an adorable gazebo / covered stage area. East of the river, stop by on the way home from work!
  2. Blue Back Square - Sunday September 8, 3 - 5 pm
New to us and we could not be more excited to play in the heart of West Hartford's entertainment and shopping district. A great opportunity for west of the river friends and fans to come hear the Guinea Pigs!
We are heading in to the peak of farmer's market, county fair, and harvest festival season; if you're involved with any of these and would like to bring the Guinea Pigs to liven up the event, please do contact us!

Wethersfield Farmer's Market

It was touch and go for a few hours, but the rain held off and we had a lovely afternoon playing for the folks at Wethersfield Farmer's Market. Dan broke in his new guitar (and it sounded lovely), Jude brought her new speakers (which will save Dan from lugging the big ones to gigs), and we had a great time.

We were a little nervous when the market master hung the sponsor banner (Farmington Bank) right in front of Jude (although she likes to hide) but we shifted right and it was OK.

And we've decided our target audience is toddlers and middle aged dancing guys. Which is a little weird. But hey, we named our band The Guinea Pigs to weird is right up our alley!

Next up, a more formal concert at MCC on Main, Friday August 8, at 8 pm.

Dan Is At It Again

Dan's whimsical bit of photo editing displayed here was sufficiently creative / warped / sycophantic  to earn him top awards in yet another internet contest. We're equally scared, jealous, and eager to hear his prize at an upcoming rehearsal.

Thanks, Bozrah Farmers' Market!

No power? No problem!

Even without our PA system, amps, and pedals, we made some music and had a blast. Jude will bring her acoustic bass next time! The little battery powered speaker (with three inputs, good for guitar, bass, and one vocal mic) did the job!

Bozrah Farmer's Market

We're heading east this week - WAY EAST - for a Friday afternoon at the Bozrah Farmers' Market. We're thrilled to be playing at a new (to us) market that was voted "Connecticut's Favorite Mid-Sized Farmers Market" in 2012.

It's a bit of a drive for regular friends and fans, but if you are out Rhode Island way, this might be a good chance to come hear us!

Billings Forge Farmers' Market

Once again we had a lovely afternoon at Billings Forge for the weekly Farmers' Market. The morning drizzle and mist transitioned to cloudy and then sunny skies - it got hot and muggy fast! Fortunately, we were buoyed by iced coffee, delicious food from the G-Monkey food truck, and of course Chet's Italian Ice!

Thanks to all our friends and fans who came to listen, stopped by to say hello, or complimented our set list. One new fan said "Your set list is pretty much right out of my iPod!" and another loved our rendition of "Take Me to the River" - with more than a little nod to Annie Lennox's "Medusa" album (although Jude swears by The Commitments version).

Sandy kept busy with a small posse of fans (who got her autograph, requested a reprise of Nancy Sinatra's "Boots", did a bit of impromptu line dancing, and were otherwise charming)

We've got some time off - next up, the Bozrah Farmers' Market on July 12th.

In case of rain...

We're excited to be invited to open up for 41Prospect at the Hartford Road Cafe in Manchester on Friday.

If the weather is fair, we're scheduled to be on the patio at 6:00 pm. However, in case of rain, the gig moves inside and we're pushed back to 8:00 pm or thereabouts. We'll let you know here and on Facebook if we're inside and later!

Dan Thompson named Manchester Town Troubadour

We're so proud of Guinea Pig guitarist and founding member Dan Thompson, who was recently named the first Town Troubadour for the town of Manchester CT.

We appreciate Dan's tasty guitar playing, dedication to live music, and effects pedal addiction - it's wonderful to see him getting recognition. We expect invites to all the prestigious troubadour events and ceremonies!

Dan got some press for this achievement, at the Journal Inquirer, the Manchester Patch, and the Reminder News.

Farmers' Market Season Approaches

Spring is in the air, and with it the promise of fresh, local produce from a nearby Farmers' Market. We Guinea Pigs love to play the farmer's market circuit. We're already booked for Higganum, Billings Forge, and Bozrah - and looking forward to setting up dates with Coventry, Wethersfield, Manchester, and others.

If you're involved with a local farmer's market (or fair, festival, or downtown civic group) that hosts music - please do contact us at guineapigsmusic@gmail.com - we'd love to set something up.

CT Marriage Equality Rally

It was an honor to play at the CT Marriage Equality Rally this evening.

We're not really "ready to go" on GLBT anthems (not a lot of Melissa Etheridge, Lady Gaga, or Abba in our set list) but we pulled out the Beatles' tune "The Word"  (....the word is LOVE....) and our standard set closer "(What's So Funny About) Peace, Love, and Understanding" and those seemed to be well received. Steve was not available (or was too smart to drag his drum kit out in the cold!) so it was a "Guinea Pigs Lite" lineup.

Cold evening with a lot of speakers, but a hardy crew stuck it out to the end. Kudos to Chivas Sandage for pulling it all together!
